The legacy of Pierre J. Verhelst lives on, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. Pierre quietly passed away in his sleep on January 10, 2026, at the age of 70, surrounded by the love he cultivated throughout his life.
As a dedicated family man, Pierre was a loving husband to Kathy McKee, sharing nearly four decades of marriage filled with laughter and companionship. He took immense pride in being a father to Tyler (who is married to Courteney), Marissa (whose partner is Evan), and Michelle (with Rob). His heart swelled with joy as he embraced his roles as Grandpa to Nora and Levi, and “Grandpaw” to Winston and Hudson. Now, he is joyfully reunited with his cherished fur-daughter, Ruby Ann Poopalot, in the great beyond.
Pierre had a unique ability to narrate his own story, revealing the essence of his life through his words and actions.
In his professional journey, Pierre retired as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. He was a pivotal founding member of the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, where his enthusiasm for aviation history shone brightly. One of his proudest achievements was overseeing the restoration of the Bell 47 D1 helicopter, which continues to be a highlight in the museum's collection. Pierre didn’t merely serve as an aviation historian there; he contributed significantly to preserving the rich tapestry of Canadian bush flying history. In recent years, he unearthed truths that had long remained hidden, showcasing his relentless pursuit of knowledge. Whenever he committed to uncovering the facts, success was sure to follow.
Pierre held a deep sense of pride in his Francophone and Indigenous heritage. His decision to return to the classroom later in life at Shingwauk University underscored his dedication to lifelong learning and cultural engagement. Moreover, he was a passionate supporter of labor rights, actively participating as an OPSEU advocate and serving as the long-standing president of Local 605. Though often reserved, his words carried weight when he chose to speak.
Throughout his retirement, which spanned over a decade, Pierre explored a variety of interests. He engaged actively with the Sault Ste. Marie Legal Clinic, participated in the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, contributed to the Algoma Amateur Radio Club, and was a loyal fan of the Soo Greyhounds. His absence will be profoundly felt, especially by the dogs in his neighborhood, who loved him dearly.
There will not be a traditional funeral service; however, the family will announce future celebrations of Pierre's remarkable life as they are organized. Instead of flowers or donations, they invite you to share a personal story about Pierre or reflect on a cherished memory you have shared with him. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre, located at 942 Great Northern Rd, Sault Ste. Marie, ON P6B 0B6, where they can be reached at 705-945-7758. You may also extend your condolences or share fond memories by visiting www.northwoodfuneral.com.
Rest in peace, Pierre. Baamaapii.
