Amid concerns over a potential pension raid by Rachel Reeves, savers are rushing to secure their financial future. The Chancellor's announcement that pension savings will be subject to inheritance tax in 2024 has sparked a surge in high-value annuity purchases. This trend is particularly notable among wealthier savers who are seeking to protect their income and, in some cases, pass on more to their heirs. Annuities, once considered a last resort, are now enjoying a renaissance, especially among those who take financial advice. Some retirees are using strong annuity income alongside other pension savings to create surplus income, which can then be gifted regularly under HMRC’s surplus-income rules. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) reports a 31% rise in annuity sales over the past year, with purchases above £500,000 jumping 54%.
