COLONTOWN Expands Patient Support With New Online Space for Colorectal Cancer Care
COLONTOWN, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals affected by colorectal cancer, has recently launched an innovative online platform. This platform offers a comprehensive support system for patients, survivors, and their caregivers, providing a sense of community and valuable resources. With thousands of members and over 100 private support groups, COLONTOWN aims to empower those facing a colorectal cancer diagnosis.
The online community is divided into various 'neighborhoods,' each catering to specific needs and interests. These neighborhoods are led by experienced 'Neighborhood Hosts' who share similar experiences as patients and survivors. Here's a breakdown of the unique features COLONTOWN offers:
- Cancer Stage and Location: Members can connect with others based on their cancer stage (I, II, III, or IV) and tumor location. This enables focused discussions on treatment options and experiences related to specific areas of the colon or rectum.
- Age, Gender, and Life Stages: COLONTOWN caters to a diverse range of individuals, including young-onset colorectal cancer patients, women, men, LGBTQ+ individuals, parents, and military personnel. It fosters connections among those facing similar challenges.
- Side Effects Management: The platform provides groups dedicated to managing treatment-related side effects. For instance, the 'Live Wire' group focuses on preventing and treating neuropathy caused by oxaliplatin treatments like FOLFOX and CAPOX.
- Local Support Groups: With over 30 U.S. regional groups and 6 international groups, COLONTOWN facilitates local connections. Members can discuss treatment options in their area or meet up for in-person support, fostering a sense of community.
- Clinical Trials Assistance: COLONTOWN offers nine clinical trial groups, where trained patient navigators provide information and answer questions. Members can share their trial experiences, offering valuable insights to others.
- Caregiver Support: The platform recognizes the needs of caregivers, offering 'caregiver-only' and 'patient-only' groups. These spaces allow caregivers and patients to find the support they require, whether they are primary caregivers, parents, or secondary caregivers.
COLONTOWN also introduces COLONTOWN University, a comprehensive educational resource. It is built upon the collective knowledge and experiences of thousands of colorectal cancer patients and caregivers within the online community. The professional content team, comprising experienced patients and caregivers, creates educational content to inform and support their peers.
Members can access Learning Centers covering various topics, such as 'CRC 101' for newly diagnosed patients and 'Clinical Trials Basics' for those exploring clinical trials. Additionally, live Zoom sessions called 'Doc Talks' feature leading colorectal cancer doctors and researchers, providing the latest treatment insights and research advancements.
