But here's where it gets controversial... NASA has a tight timeline for this mission. Despite the agency's readiness to move the 322-foot-tall Space Launch System rocket to Pad 39B on Saturday, February 17th, there's a lot riding on this launch. The plan is to send four brave astronauts to the moon, marking NASA's first crewed Artemis mission and the first astronaut mission to the moon in over half a century. It's a momentous occasion, and we're all eager to see it succeed.
A series of critical tests must be conducted to ensure the safety and success of this mission. NASA has previously launched an SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft on the Artemis 1 mission in 2022, but that was an uncrewed test flight. For Artemis 2, the Orion spacecraft is equipped with essential life support systems to sustain the astronauts during their 10-day journey. NASA wants to ensure everything is in order before sending astronauts on this historic mission.
And this is the part most people miss... NASA has a fueling test scheduled for February 2nd, which will determine if the agency can proceed with the February launch. The launch window is limited to a few days between February 6th and 10th. It took three attempts to launch Artemis 1, with fuel leaks causing delays. NASA believes it has implemented fixes, but further testing is crucial before Artemis 2 can take off.
If Artemis 2 misses its February launch window, NASA has backup plans for March and April.
