Imagine witnessing a major transformation at one of Orlando's most popular theme parks—where the excitement of Hollywood's Fast & Furious saga is set to rev up with a brand-new roller coaster. But here's where it gets controversial: this new ride isn't just about speed and thrills; it signifies a significant shift in the park’s attractions, replacing a beloved classic and sparking a mix of anticipation and nostalgia.
Recently, Universal Orlando Resort announced that the upcoming attraction, Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, is scheduled to open at Universal Studios Florida, taking over the spot previously occupied by the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit coaster, which closed last summer. Construction work is already in motion, as seen from aerial photos and onsite visits, offering a sneak peek into what promises to be an exhilarating addition.
From the vantage point of CityWalk, the construction site is clearly visible. Although a pathway remains open for visitors to walk around the zone, the space occupied now extends beyond the former coaster’s footprint, including areas previously dedicated to the Blue Man Group theater. Various construction vehicles, especially excavators, are actively at work, with some concrete footings and supporting structures taking shape across the site.
Additional progress has been observed behind the renowned Hard Rock Cafe. A series of metal poles have been positioned in the ground, encircled by temporary yellow fencing—likely the first structural stage of the new roller coaster. Nearby, construction crews are actively working, with some machinery in operation, as more concrete footers are poured and forms are set to shape the upcoming supports.
Within the construction zones, several steel frames and cylindrical supports are emerging, hinting at the coaster’s complex design. Wooden planks, boxes, and metal sheets are systematically stacked nearby, indicating ongoing preparations. Barriers and caution tape mark areas of excavation and future development, including deep holes and freshly poured concrete slabs.
Closer to the park’s entrance, a section of land has been cordoned off, revealing a deep excavation, more concrete footers, and flat surfaces ready for the coaster's structure. Most idle construction vehicles are parked along the perimeter, awaiting further work.
Inside the park, the front construction barrier at the end of a faux New York City street has been covered with vibrant graphics promoting the new ride—featuring an iconic image of Dominic Toretto’s muscle car, a 1970 Dodge Charger R/T. The thematic signage and promotional flyers remain on display, while behind the scenes, a building is beginning to take shape—albeit solely as a steel framework with some horizontal roof beams installed.
On the West Coast, at Universal Studios Hollywood, the same project is making waves. The California version of Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift features 4,100 feet of track, soundproofing technology, and 360-degree rotation mechanisms to simulate drifting—a full embrace of the franchise’s high-speed, adrenaline-pumping action. While the Florida ride won’t be an exact replica, it is anticipated to share similar features, aiming to deliver the same thrill experience. California’s version is slated for opening this year, with Florida’s expected to debut in 2027.
And here's a surprising twist: with Hollywood Drift opening, the much-criticized Fast & Furious: Supercharged attraction will be permanently closed in 2027. The California Supercharged version closed last year, capping off an era of mixed reviews and visitor opinions.
