A Flooding Crisis Unfolds: Daly River's Fight for Resilience
The Daly River community is facing a formidable challenge as floodwaters threaten to reach a critical peak on Monday. While the situation is dire, there's a glimmer of hope amidst the rising waters.
Minor Damage, Major Impact
Despite the evacuation of almost 300 residents, a handful of brave souls chose to stay behind. Incident controller David Moore confirms that three homes in the northern end of Daly River have already sustained minor water damage due to the rising flood. However, he reassures that the rest of the community remains dry, albeit with the water encroaching.
The impact is visible: three-quarters of the airstrip are underwater, and all roads leading to Daly River are impassable due to the flooding.
A Cautious Optimism
Superintendent Moore offers a cautious optimism, stating that extensive home damage is unlikely when the flood reaches its peak at 14 meters. He draws a contrast to the devastating 2018 flood, where water levels exceeded 16 meters, resulting in the loss of a significant portion of the community.
However, he acknowledges the unpredictability of nature, and emergency services are on high alert, monitoring the situation closely.
A Race Against Time
The slow-moving nature of the floodwaters means that it could take several days to a week for emergency services to access the community. Superintendent Moore estimates that it will take at least a few days for the water to recede enough for survey and assessment teams to enter safely.
