Chilton's Dental Crisis: A Call for Action
In a concerning development, residents of Chilton are facing significant barriers to accessing essential dental care, with a local councillor highlighting the dire situation. Durham County Councillor Stephen Bowron has raised his concerns about the lack of accessible NHS dental services in his ward.
The issue stems from the Integrated Care Board (ICB) refusing to fund a new dentist in Chilton, despite the presence of a fully equipped dental surgery. Bowron emphasizes the inconvenience and impracticality of residents having to travel long distances to Durham City or the coast in emergencies, which is not feasible for many.
This problem is not isolated to Chilton. Across the region, people have been enduring long waits for dental appointments, with a significant backlog and limited practice availability. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reports that this has led to years without a dental appointment for many.
The ICB acknowledges the challenges, citing difficulties in recruiting and training dentists, as well as the financial strain of providing NHS services. They admit that some of these issues require fundamental reforms to the dental contract.
However, there is a glimmer of hope. The ICB has announced new measures to improve NHS dentistry, focusing on urgent care and complex needs. They have invested £9.5 million in a new care model, including the establishment of 23 Urgent Dental Access Centres (UDACs) that will provide over 100,000 urgent dental appointments annually.
UDACs have already opened in Durham City, Barnard Castle, and Peterlee, offering in-hours urgent dental care. While these initiatives are a step in the right direction, the question remains: will they be enough to address the long-standing dental crisis in Chilton and the wider region?
